By the summer of 1306 after Robert had been crowned king of Scotland the English were on the offensive and the Queen together with Robert's daughter from his first marriage Marjorie hastened to Kildrummy under the protection of Robert's brother Sir Neil Bruce and John of Strathbogie owner of Huntly castle. They were forced to retreat further north as the English army under Edward Prince of Wales marched upon Kildrummy. The castle was then besieged but held out under Neil Bruce's command until so the story goes a fire was deliberately started by the blacksmith Osbourne who had been bribed by the English. The castle's store of precious grain kept during the siege in the Great Hall was set alight and the castle had to surrender. Neil Bruce was captured and later executed at Berwick. Kildrummy was sleighted to prevent its further use against the English but was later repaired and again besieged in 1335. Lady Christian Bruce sister of Robert held Kildrummy at the time and her husband Sir Andrew Moray defeated the besiegers on his way north to Kildrummy. The king's (David II) return from exile in France was marked by a visit to his aunt at the castle and he frequently came to see her at Kildrummy until his capture by the English in 1346.
